Steele Johnson’s top 11 movies

Posted: Updated:

During Steele Johnson’s first semester at Purdue University, he and his roommate started the tradition of watching one to two scary movies each night of finals week.

“It was spooky,” said Johnson, a filmmaker and videographer himself. “We’ve seen The Conjuring seven or eight times. It’s really good.”

The crew of housemates, which has now grown to include three more, balances those movies out with a collection of Nicholas Sparks movies, too.

“The Longest Ride and A Walk to Remember are definitely up there,” Johnson said.

It’s continued each year since, so we asked him to share his favorites.

1. A Walk Among the Tombstones – “That’s my favorite movie.”

2. The Notebook

3. The Best of Me – “The ending broke my heart.”

4. Zootopia – “Phenomenal writing. I didn’t think I was going to like it. I sat there laughing the whole time. It was awesome.”

5. Shrek – “Obviously.”

6. Sinister

7. Mama – “It’s creepy. I love scary movies.”

8. Amy – “Fantastic Amy Winehouse documentary.”

9. Spotlight

10. Prisoners – “I always try to go off the deep end [with predicting endings] but with Prisoners, I didn’t know.”

11. Hush – “It’s on Netflix. It’s a scary movie about a deaf girl living in the woods. Some guy is trying to break in and murder her, but instead of just coming in and murdering her, he taunts her the whole night. It’s really eerie and creepy.”
