Who is... Neymar

Neymar da Silva Santos Jr. is Brazil’s biggest soccer star and one of the most popular players in the world. All eyes will be on him at the 2016 Olympics as he tries to lead Brazil to its first Olympic soccer gold medal. 


Soccer beginnings

Neymar was recognized as an elite soccer talent at a young age. He joined Santos FC’s youth system when he was 11 years old and stayed with the club through his teenage years. In 2009, at the age of 17, he made his professional debut with the senior team.

Breakout moment

In 2010, Neymar dominated Brazil’s professional league with Santos FC. He won the league scoring title as well as the Player of the Year award, a feat he would accomplish the next two years as well. Neymar also debuted with Brazil’s senior national team that year. 


Olympic experience

Neymar is appearing in his second Olympics. He led Brazil to the silver medal at the 2012 London Games, scoring three goals in the tournament. 



Europe success

Neymar’s strong play for both club and country in Brazil made him a highly desirable player for most of the top teams in the world, including many in Europe. In 2013, he made the move to Barcelona FC where he has played since. In his three years with the team, he has scored over 50 goals.
