Usain Bolt wins his first 200m race of the year

Posted: Updated:

Usain Bolt erased any questions about his health, clocking 19.89 seconds to win the 200m at a Diamond League meet in London on Friday.

“I’m getting there, I’m not fully in shape, I need more work, but over time I’ll be fine,” Bolt said to the BBC. “The key thing is I came out injury-free.”

It was the fifth-fastest fastest time of 2016, but all three sprinters who will run the 200m for the U.S. in Rio—LaShawn Merritt, Justin Gatlin and Ameer Webb—have run faster times this year.

Bolt had not raced since July 1, when he withdrew before the 100m final at Jamaica’s Olympic Trials, citing an injured hamstring.

He does not have any more races scheduled before the 2016 Olympics, where he will race to defend his 100m, 200m and 4x100m gold medals.

Bolt had not run a 200m since Aug. 27, when he defeated Justin Gatlin at the 2015 World Championships.
