Mexico men’s soccer team: What you need to know

Last Olympic appearance-

Mexico went undefeated at the 2012 London Olympics en route to the gold medal. 

Overage players-

Oribe Peralta was the hero of the 2012 Olympic Gold Medal Match, scoring both goals in Mexico’s victory. Now 32 years old, he is appearing in his second Olympics as an overage player hoping to add to his tally of four goals at the Games. 

Jorge Torres, 28, has appeared in 48 matches for Mexico’s senior team. He provides stability to Mexico's left back postiiton. 

Goalkeeper Alfredo Talavera made his professional debut in 2003. At 33 years old, he is the oldest player on Mexico’s roster. 

Players to watch-

Hirving Lozano is one of Mexico’s top talents. The Pachuca winger likes to operate on the left side of the field where he dribbles at defenders. At the 2016 Copa America, Lozano appeared in four matches, including two starts for Mexico’s senior team.

Rodolfo Pizarro is familar with Lozano as the two are teammates at Pachuca. Pizarro has appeared in six matches for Mexico’s senior team, having debuted in 2014. The center midfielder has one goal in his short international career. 

Erick “Cubo” Torres is a forward for Mexico. Torres has played much of his professional career in the U.S. with Chivas USA and Houston Dynamo of MLS. He has scored six goals in 10 matches with Mexico’s U-23 team.


Raul Gutierrez began coaching Mexico’s U-17 team in 2010. He makes his Olympic coaching debut this summer.  

Medal hopes-

Mexico drew Germany, South Korea and Fiji in Group C. They should compete with Germany to top the group. Mexico is a medal contender, but faces a tall task in defending its Olympic title against the likes of Brazil, Germany and others.
