NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Pat Summitt influenced women's basketball more than any single person, but just about anyone will tell you the longtime coach transcended sports.

Summitt was born in Tennessee. She died there Tuesday morning at the age of 64.

It’s not just a loss for the sporting world, the coach's death is being felt all across the country.

Music City was lit up in orange Tuesday night to honor her.

Drivers may have also even seen Summit's face on a billboard as they drove home from work Tuesday evening.

The mere mention of her name lit up the airwaves Tuesday on 104.5 The Zone.

“She has always been my mentor. I don't want to get choked up, but I've been crying all day. She was too young to die,” one caller said.

Flags were lowered to half-staff per Gov. Bill Haslam’s request.

“Pat was a trailblazer and she was one of those people that you look to for inspiration,” said Nashville Mayor Megan Barry

Barry said Summitt's success paved the way for women leaders all over the country, including her.

“Pat was an excellent example for women everywhere to aspire to be their best selves all the time, and to do it with strength, grace and dignity,” Barry said.

Barry also credits Summitt for helping bring a big tournament to Music City in 2014.

“I think when people say that Pat Summitt was instrumental in bringing the Final Four to Nashville, that is absolutely true. Our history with women's sports in Tennessee and our history with Pat is what made it possible for Nashville to host those,” Barry said.

Look no further than social media to see how Summitt impacted the president of the United States and former secretary of state.

“Every day she got up and gave it her all and expected the people around her to give it their all as well, and I think that's a true leader and true inspiration,” Barry said.
