NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam was one of several governors set to meet with Republican presumptive presidential nominee Donald Trump on Tuesday in the New York area.

Haslam released an ad just days prior to the Tennessee primary in March in support of Florida Sen. Marco Rubio in the presidential race.

“To win this November, conservatives need a leader who can inspire our country,” Haslam said in the television ad. “I hope you join me in voting for Marco Rubio. You’ll be glad you did.”

Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey has said positive words about Trump, bus Haslam has yet to make the new endorsement.

“I think he is running against political correctness that people are tired of,” said Ramsey. “I think they’re ready to have a straight shooter.”

“Who we elect matters, and the public debate about that matters,” said Haslam. “It needs to be strong and healthy.”

In the past, the governor has asked Trump for a more blatant disavowal of white supremacist groups, a stronger stand against abortion and a chance in some of his rhetoric.

“I do think words matter,” said Haslam. “I think that’s one of the conversations we’ll have.”

Then there was Trump’s call for a temporary ban on Muslims entering the country.

In recent weeks, Haslam has been calling for a meeting between Trump and other Republican governors.

“We want to make sure whoever the next president’s going to be that they understand the concerns the states have,” said Haslam. “In particular, our view on things, whether it be health care or economic development.”

There is still no word on whether Haslam will give Trump that endorsement.

“Do you support Trump?” the governor was asked at the Statesmen’s Dinner.

“Again, I’m looking forward to having a conversation with him,” replied Haslam. “I want our team to win the election in November. I think we can do that.”

Other governors reported to be at the meeting at Trump Tower included New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson and Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant.
