NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Two teenagers were shot near the intersection of 18th Avenue North and Cass Street on Saturday afternoon.

Police said one of them was shot in the hand and the other was shot in the hip.

According to police, one of the victims ran behind a nearby apartment complex. He was picked up by a friend and taken to the hospital.

Officials said they are looking for at least two other teens who left the scene in a maroon car.

The gunfire played out within earshot of a youth violence meeting just a block away.

"These guns will kill, that is why we did the event at the funeral home," said Earl Jordan.

Jordan, a community activist, was kicking off his summer campaign to end youth violence on Saturday afternoon.

"We wanted to do something where we could engage our youth for something positive," said Jordan.

"The very first thing that comes to our minds is the senseless act of violence. Both of these are young men, 15 and 16 years old, regardless what their activities are, it's very unfortunate they have been injured," said Capt. David Corman with the Metro Police Department.

Youth violence is something Mayor Megan Barry is passionate about ending as well.

"Not one of these investments are going to help us if we don't feel safe," Barry said.

In Barry's State of Metro address just weeks ago, she said she wanted to spend $2.7 million for job and after-school programs she hopes will steer young people away from crime.

"One way to mitigate violence is to replace it with opportunity for our youth. As part of that opportunity, now match our young people with first jobs and other employment opportunities," Barry said.
