NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Downtown Nashville is always a scene on Friday, and people are spending a fortune to spend time in the city.

“For hotels? Absolutely,” said Chris Mroz of Detroit.

Mroz was so upset with high hotel prices that he is staying in two different hotels during his four days in Nashville.

“The weekend rate is so high, we actually moved to the outskirts of town for the last two days,” he said.

It’s graduation weekend in Nashville. Vanderbilt University and dozens of high schools are hosting ceremonies.

But that’s not the only reason for the high rates. The situation appears to be permanent.

“I looked around at another week and it’s not just graduation,” said George Overun of Atlanta. “The everyday prices are high, shockingly high.”

The Overuns are paying $329 a night at Homewood Suites. They like the chain, but not the price.

“Those places of that category, maybe $129, $149 in the city, $99 if you are on the interstate,” George Overun said.

Even the Nashville Convention and Visitor’s Bureau that helped build the success thinks prices are ridiculous.

“It’s not right,” said Butch Spyridon with the convention and visitor’s bureau. “We have been preaching to our hotel partners we need to pay attention to what we are doing. It’s a marathon. I would rather be wealthy over the long haul than try to get rich quick.”

Spyridon said those prices could go down in the future.

“On one hand, the good news is we haven’t lost any business, any traction. But I think it’s a matter of time. Eventually there will be a price resistance,” he said. “But we have 1,500 rooms under construction in 10 months, lots of inventory. Put some normalcy back in the pricing strategy.”
