NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

For people with certain medical or physical challenges, something as simple as sitting down can be difficult.

A place in Tennessee is tackling the challenges for people who have a hard time getting comfortable. Gov. Bill Haslam talked about them in his last state of the state address.

Deborah Poirier directs, tweaks and tinkers to make her clients more comfortable. She is the director of Seating and Positioning Services for the state of Tennessee.

Poirier said she has seen how the right equipment makes every day miracles happen.

“We’ve seen massive changes by using alternative positioning,” Poirier said. “For someone like Ty, to be able to drive independently, that’s amazing. So imagine going through life, something pushing you, have somebody take you, then suddenly being able to drive in your home. That’s amazing. That’s independence for somebody.”

Poirier fine-tuned Ty Jordan’s electric wheelchair. She said the fact he is in it at all is something doctors said couldn’t be done.

“Doctors said because he didn’t drive with his hands, that he wouldn’t be able to drive,” Poirier said. “So Ty fired his doctor and found someone to support his goals.”

The Department of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities is now working toward a mobile clinic to take their services to those who need it.

“A lot of people don’t have a chair, don’t have transportation, so to be able to go to them would be amazing,” Poirier said.

Haslam gave the DIDD a high-profile shout-out in his last state of the state address, asking for funding.

“The joy, support and relief that this state service provides – if it doesn’t inspire you, then check your pulse,” the governor said.

Poirier hopes that mention will help push the project forward and make even more miracles happen.

“If I could say something right now, I would say, you see this? I can do this,” Jordan said.
