NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

The 9/11 Memorial and New York City and the quiet grounds of Cheekwood Botanical Gardens are just two of the places featuring Steve Tobin’s eye-grabbing sculptures.

Cheekwood’s trees serve as the natural inspiration for some of Tobin’s sculptures in his Southern Roots exhibit.

“These are like my drawings using the sun and pieces to create these shadows,” Tobin said.

More than 100 are now on display in west Nashville.

Another piece, Trinity Root, can be seen in New York City. It is a tribute to the tree that helped shield and save St. Paul’s Chapel during the Sept. 11 attack.

Tobin said anyone who looks and wonders how they’re supposed to react is thinking too much.

“You shouldn’t have to do anything,” he said. “So there’s no expectations on viewers to get what I intend. They bring their own life experiences to it and enjoy it or not.

“’Wow’ is the ultimate critical review for me,” Tobin added. “A good, solid, strong ‘wow’ and you know you’ve done good.”

Tobin’s Southern Roots exhibit will be on display at Cheekwood all summer. Admission is $16.
