TDOT says creative signs getting results

Posted: Updated:

Chances are most Middle Tennessee drivers have chuckled at the signs above interstates that creatively remind them to drive safely.

About a year ago, Tennessee Department of Transportation officials wondered if they could have a little fun with the interstate announcements that are designed to save lives.

They decided yes, and it’s working.

“Fan favorite is definitely, ‘Eyes on the road, head out of your apps,’” said Kathyrn Schulte with TDOT.

Schulte said the signs are designed for a fast-moving life.

“We just want three seconds, and these messages really help us cut through all of that now,” she said.

There were custom signs for Thanksgiving and Christmas. There was even a special sign on the day the new Star Wars movie hit theaters.

For now, most other states are sticking with more obvious and straight-forward signage.

“It is true that other DOTs have seen what we’ve done and have said, ‘Oh no, we could never do that.’ Because some of the messages do catch you off guard,” Schulte said.

With interstate fatalities down, Schulte said there may be more roadway creativity to come.

“Who knows,” she said. “Anything can happen.”

Traffic fatalities in 2015 were the third-lowest in Tennessee since 1963.

For the second year, TDOT is opening up new sign suggestions and possibilities to the public with a contest. About 3,400 submitted their ideas last year.
