NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A Nashville filmmaker has caught the attention of Major League Baseball and some of its greatest players.

Her new movie is what she calls a love story about baseball’s underdog.

Molly Secours is a highly respected Nashville documentary filmmaker. Her moves have spotlighted at-risk teens, and usually seek social and racial justice.

But for the last year, Secours just can’t stop thinking about baseball.

“So this is about as far away as you can get from everything I’ve ever worked on,” she said.

Secours’ documentary, Scouting the Diamonds, shines light on the nameless and tireless men who found baseball’s great players long before they were hall of famers, like Wade Boggs of the Boston Red Sox.

“You just wonder why God puts people like that on earth to find people like me,” Boggs said.

Emotion and gratitude from baseball’s best, including George Brett and Willie Mays, drives the film.

For 20 years, Secours’ Nashville films gave a voice to the voiceless. This baseball story does that, too.

“I realized one day that I’ve always been an advocate for the underdogs,” Secours said. “And the scouts are the underdogs. They are the invisible heroes of baseball.”

From home plate in east Nashville, she has crisscrossed the country, filling binders with baseball interviews.

“This isn’t a sports film. This is a love story between scouts and baseball,” Secours said.

Secours said she hopes the film inspires MLB to create a wing for scouts at the Baseball Hall of Fame.

The independent film is in full fundraising mode right now. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Professional Baseball Scouts Foundation, which provides health benefits and financial support to scouts in need.
