Norman Rockwell’s holiday creations are on display in Nashville.

For 47 years, Rockwell’s artwork on the cover of the Saturday Evening Post helped set the mood in America for the week ahead. Many of those holiday memories are on display at Cheekwood Museum of Art.

Santa Claus may have never had a friend as favorable as Rockwell. Before television, Rockwell’s December drawings put the country in the mood for Christmas.

“They’re very nostalgic,” said Brian Downey with Cheekwood. “I think it’s something a lot of people can relate to, especially at the holidays. And I think it’s something younger folks are interested in and can come and learn more about Rockwell and his art.”

The Home for the Holidays exhibit is traveling the world. It will be at Cheekwood for just a couple more weeks.

The Saturday Evening Post and its covers set the scene in America for 150 years, long before television of social media.

Directors George Lucas and Steven Spielberg still credit Rockwell as childhood inspirations.

“They looked forward to receiving these in the mail every year,” Downey said. “His background was almost like a movie director.”

Rockwell’s Home for the Holidays exhibit is on display at Cheekwood through Jan. 17.
