NASHVILLE, TN (NBC) -

A Nashville woman’s death that was initially believed to be caused by drug abuse is now being investigated as a homicide.

Cheyenne Toineeca, 30, was unresponsive when she was transported to the hospital early Tuesday morning from a friend’s home in the 5100 block of Linbar Drive.

Toineeca died hours later.

Witnesses said Toineeca was discovered on the ground in front of the home between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. Tuesday. She was reportedly awake and coherent, but could not get up without help.

Toineeca’s friend helped her inside. She complained that her ribs hurt. Police said she was found to be in medical distress later that morning.

Detectives are investigating whether Toineeca may have been injured during a recent altercation with a man.

Anyone who saw Toineeca last Sunday or Monday, or has information about the alleged altercation, is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 615-742-7463.
