Experts share Christmas safety tips for young children

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Many of us will soon be heading out of town to visit family and friends for Christmas.

If those travel plans include young children, experts have some tips to keep them safe.

If you will be driving to your holiday destination, avoid dressing your baby in a heavy coat. Safe Kids Worldwide says bulky clothing can keep a car seat from doing its job.

Instead, experts say cover little ones with a blanket to keep them warm.

If you will be spending the night away, it’s important your child has a safe place to sleep. Be sure to keep all medications off of nightstands and away from the reach of curious toddlers.

It also never hurts to check and make sure a home has a working carbon monoxide detector and smoke alarm.

Opening gifts can add lots of excitement, but keep an eye on your little one.

Many new toys contain button batteries which can be very dangerous if they’re swallowed. Also be sure to throw away any wrapping of packaging that could be a choking hazard.
