Couple's dog takes part in proposal from 600 miles away

Posted: Updated:

A Nashville couple’s Thanksgiving holiday included turkey, cranberry sauce and a very unusual wedding proposal.

Mac Barlow and Sarah Squire consider each other their best friend. They have been together for six years and probably wondered if they would ever get married.

In an unusual way, they are not wondering anymore.

Barlow and Squire love their dog, Wylie. So when they traveled east for Thanksgiving, Wylie needed a kennel.

The couple figured a good place would be the Dog Spot, where Wylie could be comfortable with plenty of company. They also have online cameras so owners can check on their dogs.

That got Barlow thinking.

“I always wanted to get Wylie involved with my proposal, and when I thought about it for a little bit, it clicked,” he said.

From 600 miles away, Barlow needed Squire to click on the Dog Spot’s website.

“Mac was like, ‘Let’s go check on Wylie,’” Squire said. “We get in the house, pull up the website, and sure enough, there he is.”

Wylie was lying down above a heart-shaped sign.

“It said, ‘Sarah, will you marry me?’ I didn’t want to get too crazy,” Barlow said.

After Squire said yes, the couple opened a bottle of champagne. The staff at the Dog Spot also celebrated being part of the proposal.

The couple has not yet set a date for the wedding, but Chad Baker with the Dog Spot said he will save a place for Wylie when the two go on their honeymoon.
