Nashville artist still rocking after 30 years

Webb Wilder’s brand of rock and roll has been a Music City staple for 30 years.

Wilder still hasn’t hit the big time, but his persona, critical acclaim and passionate performances night after night are hall of fame quality.

Getting people to listen was all Wilder ever wanted. His first album, It Came From Nashville, was released in 1986.

“The last of the full grown men, as I often say,” Wilder said.

Every inch of his 6’5” is all show business.

“Work hard, rock hard, eat hard, sleep hard, grow big, wear glasses if you need them,” he said. “The Webb Wilder credo.”

Wilder’s family was furniture store owners in Mississippi. He arrived in Nashville in 1985.

Now, his career keeps lasting. Wilder’s latest album of soul-filled blues recordings has been praised by critics. He’s also a Hollywood actor and satellite radio DJ with a worldwide following.

“Looking back at it is kind of amazing,” Wilder said. “Here I am, a paunchy and bespectacled, mostly balding, hat-wearing guy who got major label rock deals with my band.”

Wilder is still a secret to the mainstream, but he said that’s OK.

“There are no lasers, not even a strobe light. I’d like to have one. It’s three to four guys playing rock and roll,” he said.

Wilder is creating his own music festival called Webb Fest. It takes place Saturday night at Nashville Exit/In. For more information, click here.
