NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A new photography book celebrates timeless sites across Tennessee.

Photographer and writer Jerry Park spent two years driving more than 10,000 miles without ever leaving the state.

Park mostly stayed on the back roads. Instead of looking for the spectacular, he set his sights on the everyday side of Tennessee.

“The whole idea was to find that part of Tennessee that’s never changed in 100 years or more,” Park said.

Park took a map, a camera and a sense of nuanced nostalgia on this two-year journey. The result is Slow Roads Tennessee: A Photographic Journey Down Timeless Byways.

The book features photos for all of Tennessee’s 95 counties.

Park said he chose to capture a more subtle Tennessee that others often choose to just drive by.

“Shorthand would be you could travel north on a road, you can turn around five miles later, travel south and see something totally different,” Park said.

Park’s photos show that the road is more than just a place for your wheels.

“For me, it’s much more than a way to get from here to there,” he said. “It is a destination itself.”

The book also features essays, including memories of his father and other travels.

“He would go up to a perfect stranger on the sidewalk, bust out his hand and say, ‘Howdy, my name’s Park. What’s yours?’ How could you not love a man like that?” Park said.

Park’s book is available online and at many booksellers.
