GOODLETTSVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Along Highway 31 in Goodlettsville, some things never change.

The Johnson family has been selling honey since 1918.

“That was my great-grandfather, my grandfather, my daddy and me, all in the bee business … in one way or another,” said Robert Johnson, a beekeeper.

The busy bees make it happen with Johnson’s careful daily guidance.

The headgear and smoke are a beekeeper’s best friend, but in this business, the sting is an everyday thing.

“I haven’t yet today, but usually you do get stung,” Johnson said.

One bee can only make one teaspoon of honey in a lifetime, but Johnson’s bees produce about 150 gallons of honey a week.

“But when you’ve got 40 to 50,000 bees to a hive, they’ll produce a little honey,” he said.

The bees work hard, and so does Johnson.

“Oh definitely, make you sweat a little bit,” he said.

Johnson can’t mind the store while he’s out with his bees, but his message to customers is to please be honest.

“Take the honey and leave the money,” Johnson said.
