A 2,000 degree furnace, a 5,000 degree blow torch and a whole lot of confidence are the things that get Grant Garmezy through his day.

The orange glow of his high heat is the science behind the glass bending art. Garmezy provides the imagination.

Inside Franklin’s Art Glass Studio, Garmezy carefully shapes and designs the hot glass.

“Because the glass is 2,000 degrees, so I have to use these metal tools all the time,” Garmezy said.

As he creates his works of art, he sees what others don’t.

“This is going to be a glass deer antler, and a pretty large one,” Garmezy said. “It doesn’t look like it now, but it will.”

Garmezy’s glass art shows up in galleries around the world. The process is thousands of years old. Focus, precision and talent make it happen.

“Also just 11 years of trial and error practice,” he said.

Dealing with such high temperatures, Garmezy can never relax.

“Lot of times it’s not the glass that burns you, it’s 2,000 degrees, it’s the tools,” Garmezy said. “It just comes with the territory, but I love that.”

Garmezy said what he loves most is the moment.

“I love that moment when I do that one move, and that’s when people see it,” he said. “They’re investing as much as I am.”

Garmezy and artists from across the country are in town Saturday for Artclectic at the University School of Nashville. The event features a collection of the best young artists in all types of mediums.
