Band members who met at Belmont to play Ryman

Young men and women from across the country enroll at Belmont University with hopes of having a career in music.

Making it to the big time isn’t easy, but it is possible.

Judah and the Lion will perform Friday and Saturday at the Ryman Auditorium, fulfilling a lifelong dream for the five band members who met at Belmont.

Pit stops and gas station fill-ups are part of the routine for the white van full of Southern soul and rock and roll. Over 18 months of non-stop touring, the band has traveled 120,000 miles.

“When you’re playing music with your best friends and get to travel, it’s an amazing experience,” said band member Brian MacDonald.

Judah and the Lion is making waves on stages nationwide. The members from Knoxville, Chicago and Colorado all came together at Belmont.

“We all went to Belmont,” MacDonald said. “We’re all really different, to be honest. We clicked musically.”

All in their mid-20s, they have played on David Letterman and now the Ryman. The long road trips have put them on a fast track.

“Such a historic place, and even if you mess up or don’t put on a good show, it feels like right,” MacDonald said. “So many amazing people have played here.”

After the Ryman, it’s off to Memphis and then Texas for the band of Belmont bluegrass brothers.

“We love what we get to do,” MacDonald said. “Playing music and traveling.”

The members of Judah and the Lion said they didn’t go to Belmont to be in a band, it just kind of happened on its own.
