Suspect dies after being shot by Dickson County deputy - WSMV Channel 4

The investigation continues into a deadly deputy-involved shooting in Cumberland Furnace on Friday.

Around 10 a.m., deputies were called out to check on 47-year-old Gregory Herrell's welfare on Freeman Loop Road.

Police say family members called and said he had a shotgun, but investigators have not said what happened that led to a deputy opening fire.

"Upon arrival, they did make contact with the individual inside that home. During that contact, one of the deputies discharged a weapon," said Susan Niland with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

Herrell was hit by gunfire and died at the hospital.

"My sister was there in the living room with my father when he got shot. And the officer shot him because one knocked on the front door and the other officer walked around the back door and shot him when he was sitting on the couch, and my grandmother was telling them that the gun wasn't loaded," said Herrell's son, Garrett Herrell. 
 
Herrell's family said he was addicted to painkillers and had come over to his mother's house looking for money and ended up getting into an argument with her and his daughter. 

"When the officer seen it, I guess it was taped up, I mean, an old 40-year-old shotgun, and you know, they say he went for it, but his sister and mother said he didn't, so I'm not sure. But they shot three times with an AR-15 and he's dead at the hospital right now," said family friend Jason Wall.

The TBI has taken over the investigation at the request of the DA's office. They have brought in forensic teams and are questioning witnesses.
