SHELBYVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

The mother of a suspect in a Fayetteville murder was found dead in her apartment hours after he surrendered to authorities.

Authorities said Angela Sales, also known as Angela Kibbles, was found dead inside her apartment. Michael Sales was arrested on Sunday night and charged in connection with the shooting death of Carlton Capone Caruth.

Tennessee Bureau of Investigation officers worked for seven or eight hours inside Angela Sales apartment on Monday.

Neighbors described Angela Sales as a friendly, talkative person who was also very cautious.

“She ain’t gonna let just anybody in her house,” said neighbor Betty Robertson. “It’s somebody she knew. They knew was going to be by herself. I don’t know if she got into it or whatever.”

Any other day, Robertson said she’d be on a porch with Angela Sales, looking out over their Oak Hill Village complex.

She said they’d be talking about family and grandchildren, Angela’s favorite subjects. On Monday, Robertson joins a neighborhood struggling to believe Angela Sales is gone.

“Last night around 12, I had my window open and I heard something like a firecracker,” said Robertson.

Robertson said she got a knock at her door early this morning by police warning her something was wrong.

“The neighbor downstairs said it was Angela, and I’m like Angela?” said Robertson.

Last week Angela Sales’ son, Michael Sales, was added to the TBI’s most wanted list in connection with the Fayetteville shooting death of Caruth during the Labor Day weekend.

Michael Sales was arrested without incident on Sunday night.

“You have families with multiple attachments to individuals involved with two incidents that happened in two different counties in two different cities,” said TBI spokeswoman Susan Niland. “It’s terribly emotional for all involved.”

Robertson said she’s desperate to know what happened to her neighbor.

“Her son wouldn’t have done something like this,” said Robertson. “They’re too close of a family and I don’t really know what happened, but I know it wasn’t her son.”

Robertson said she will miss those long talks about grandchildren.

“I hope they get whoever done this because she is a good lady,” said Robertson.

Michael Sales is being held in the Lincoln County Jail in Fayetteville.
