Owner, customers fight to keep market in business

Posted: Updated:

A fight is brewing to keep a longtime market owner in business.

Dan Smith owns the Granny White Market on Granny White Pike, also known as The Purple Cow.

Smith said his landlord called on Tuesday afternoon and told him, “Time’s up.” The landlord said he would be taking over the property on Oct. 1.

Smith has owned the market for 19 years. Loyal customers are outraged over the news.

“I couldn’t believe it. That was ruthless,” said Lynn King, a longtime customer. “Anyone who’s done as much for the community as this one man, I didn’t understand it.

“He is the community,” King added. “He’s the definition of servant and kind and courtesy and manners. He’s everything to everybody.”

Smith’s wife and children work with him. He said he has watched all the kids in the area grow up over the years.

“People love us and we love them,” Smith said. “It’s going to be hard for someone to come in and try to change it.”

Smith said he has offered to buy the market from his landlord, but said he hasn’t received a response.

His customers have started an online petition to keep the Smith family in business. Click here to learn more.
