Nashville barbershop a step back in time

Nashville can be pretty fast-paced, but those who look hard enough can still find a few places where time has stood still.

Craighead Barber Shop on Jefferson Street has everything it needs to make it a classic. All that is missing for owner and barber Joe Trotter are the customers, but Trotter says that’s just fine.

“Oh yeah, I have no problem with it,” he said. “I’m retired. I’ve did all that, now it’s just to have something to do.”

Trotter has spent 40 years cutting hair and said he finally has some peace and quiet.

“This was a barbershop that always had someone in it,” Trotter said. “It was real busy back in the day.”

Trotter is retired, but still open for business. He said old customers won’t let him go and new ones make him laugh.

“Young people come in, ‘Give me a fade,’” he said. “I started off doing fades in the ‘70s, you know. They think it’s new.”

Trotter said a little work and a slow day still beats life on the golf course.

“I can’t hit the ball in the river,” Trotter said. “Not going to hit it in that little hole. They’re trying to hit it in, so I just gave up on that.”

Craighead Barber Shop was named the best in Tennessee by Barbershops of America.
