The son of a Robertson County deputy was killed in what police are calling an accidental shooting.

Deputies responded to a home on Clinard Road in Barren Plains around 4 p.m. Wednesday and said they found 15-year-old Justin McGhee had been shot once with a .22-caliber rifle.

Police said they tried to resuscitate him until paramedics arrived. McGhee later died from his injuries at Northcrest Medical Center.

According to the sheriff's office, they believe the rifle was accidentally discharged while it was being unloaded.

McGhee is the son of Deputy Shaun McGhee, who is a school resource officer.

The sheriff's office issued this statement: "We ask for prayers for his family and all those involved during the tragic and difficult time."

Grief counselors were on hand Thursday at Jo Byrns High School, where Justin went to school and his father worked as a school resource officer.
