Ashland City man's canaries known as best birds around

Posted: Updated:

Long before any of us got out hands on computers, canaries ruled the roost when it came to tweets. They still do in the basement of Rick Hackett’s home.

From his Ashland City home, Hackett’s basement sings.

“It’s more of a whistle,” Hackett said. “I’m not very good at it.”

Hackett breeds and sells canaries nationwide for $80 a bird. That’s cheaper than any pet shop.

“I have a full-time job,” Hackett said. “It’s not a money maker, it’s something I enjoy.”

His canaries have become companions to customers in 48 states. Hackett said they are the perfect pet to pass the time.

“Yes, they talk to the birds,” he said. “Like they do dogs, cats and even children.”

Hackett said each bird has its own unique personality.

“Some birds really do love each other and never want to be separated, kind of like humans in a way,” he said.

Hackett said potential owners have driven eight hours to come see his canaries in person.
