Many seniors picking up pickleball

FRANKLIN, TN (WSMV) -

Football, basketball and hockey are on summer hiatus right now, but there's always pickleball.

The sport is part of the Tennessee Senior Olympics taking place this month in Franklin.

The motto of the women on the court for the Senior Olympic finals is that you're never too old for pickleball. The competition includes a ball and paddle, but not a pickle.

"Oh yeah, you wouldn't play if you're not competitive," said Boots Silver, 75.

Silver's got game, often facing the younger and spryer 65-year-olds and beating them.

"It's very much fun to whip up on people," Silver said.

The fast-paced game has replaced slow-moving shuffleboard for many senior citizens. The game requires quicker actions and reflexes.

But you don't have to be at Olympic levels to pick up and play.

"Anybody who wants to play can play," Silver said.

The reason behind the name of the sport is still a bit of a mystery. Some believe the man who invented the game in the 1960s named it after his dog.
