MOUNT JULIET, TN (WSMV) -

A man was arrested in Mt. Juliet after an officer allegedly spotted him driving the wrong way on an off-ramp for Interstate 40 on Sunday night.

The officer said 59-year-old Robert Benter turned off Providence Way and went in the wrong direction on the ramp for Exit 226-C.

According to the Mt. Juliet Police Department, the officer was able to stop Benter before he was able to enter the interstate.

The officer believed Benter was driving under the influence, so field sobriety testing was conducted.

Police said the officer found a 40-ounce bottle of beer in a cooler sitting in the front seat.

Benter was arrested and booked into the Wilson County jail on a charge of DUI. He was also cited for driving the wrong direction on a one-way street and for open container.
