NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

"Listen to your mother."

It's more than just good advice. In 37 cities across the country, including Nashville, it's also the title of a one-night show.

For all of us, life begins with Mom. Then it goes in a million directions. Those stories were deemed worth of a stage show.

About 80 people auditioned for the show. Carrie Weir, Isaiah Marshall and Jennifer Case Cortez all made the cut. At the Brentwood Library on Monday, they shared their mother memories.

"My mother had a lot of wisdom and I should have listened, but I didn't," Marshall said. "But now I can take that and really use it as I'm raising my daughter."

The show begins at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center in May. Listen to Your Mother features 14 speakers with seven-minute essays on motherhood.

"'Don't be common,' is what my Mom would say," Cortez said. "'Jennifer, don't be common. No rude jokes or slang,' and it served me well."

"I have an 11-year-old daughter who often reminds me I'm very much like my mother, and that is both good and bad," Weir said. "And I tell her someday she might sound like me or Grandma."

Many of the speakers are those who wished they had listened who now have children who sometimes don't.

"I have three boys and a little girl," Cortez said. "So the boys, I get a lot of eye rolls from them."

"You should listen to most of the things your mother say," Weir said. "Perhaps not all."

The show takes place on May 2 at the Polk Theater inside TPAC. For more information, click here.
