SHELBYVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Police are investigating after an elderly woman's body was found on the side of a road in Shelbyville.

The body was found on the 100 block of Mullins Mill Road just after 6 a.m. Police said she was found nude and with no positive identification.

"She wasn't laying in the road, but she was laying right beside the road," Bedford County Sheriff Austin Swing said. "There was obviously no attempt to hide the body."

Swing said the victim appeared to be in her 60s or 70s and had obvious trauma.

The Bedford County Sheriff's Office called the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation around 6:30 a.m. Monday requesting assistance with the investigation.

The sheriff's office said Monday afternoon that this case is being investigated as a homicide.

TBI agents were on the scene Monday.

The victim was identified as 86-year-old Lois Espy of Murfreesboro.

"This lady has got to be someone's mother or aunt, mother-in-law, whatever," Swing said. "Maybe she lives alone and someone just hadn't missed her yet."

Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact police.
