HENDERSON, TN (WSMV) -

A veterans advocacy group is planning a town hall meeting they hope will help save lives.

The Tennessee Council of the Vietnam Veterans of America will host a suicide prevention and PTSD awareness meeting Tuesday night at the First Baptist Church in Hendersonville.

Organizers said Veterans Affairs representatives will be there to connect help with those who need it.

Other veterans and families who have been through the same experiences will also be there to talk.

"To go to a VA hospital or to go to a vets center or even to go to a doctor, there's a fear factor, because they're afraid that they won't understand," said Barry Rice with the Tennessee Council of the Vietnam Veterans of America. "But if they know they're going to be around someone who understands, a fellow veteran, they'll come in.

"We cannot stand by and watch as veterans take their lives and families are destroyed," Rice said.

The town hall meeting begins at 6 p.m. and is open to veterans of all conflicts, active duty troops and their families.
