Convicted felon charged in fatally shooting roommate

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) - A man died after an early morning shooting in north Nashville Sunday.

The fatal shot rang out at a home on Seifried Street around 6:30 a.m.

According to Metro police, Ellis McHaney, 55, said that he and his roommate Mickel Phillips were going to sell guns for money to buy drugs. During an argument related to the sale, McHaney said he grabbed one of the guns and shot Phillips.

Phillips was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he later died.

Police confiscated three guns, including the alleged murder weapon.

McHaney is charged with criminal homicide. He also has previous convictions for negligent homicide and cocaine possession.
