Millions to travel through Tennessee for holidays

Posted: Updated:
NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) - More than two million people are expected to drive through Tennessee for Christmas and New Year's celebrations.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation will halt road construction across the state at noon Tuesday.

"With two million drivers expected to travel Tennessee roadways during the Christmas and New Year's holidays, it's imperative that we do everything possible to keep traffic moving and minimize congestion," said TDOT Commissioner John Schroer.

Despite the work stoppage, some crews may still be on-site in some construction zones.  Driers should obey all posted speed limits.

"Our law enforcement partners will be out in full force, so wear your seatbelt, reduce your speed, avoid distractions, and don't drive if you've been drinking," Schroer said.

According to AAA, more than 89 million Americans will drive to their holiday destinations - the largest volume since 2001.
