A Nashville mother is demanding answers about the investigation into her child's murder.

Gilbert "Gizzy" Fowler, 24, was found shot to death last week outside a vacant house in north Nashville.

Fowler's family held a news conference on Wednesday at Mt. Carmel Church.

Tiffany Fowler said she's tired of waiting. The mother of three wants to know why Gilbert Fowler was murdered a week ago and why she wasn't told the body was ready for a proper burial until five days later.

"I'm not supposed to be burying my son," Tiffany Fowler said.

She also wants the case investigated as a hate crime.

Gilbert Fowler was part of Nashville's transgender community. Tiffany Fowler said she knew about this for years.

"I don't care how he was dressed, what type of clothes he wore," Tiffany Fowler said. "Gilbert was my baby."

The family said the medical examiner's office never informed them when Gilbert Fowler's body was ready to be released.

"Nobody called me from the medical examiner's office," Tiffany Fowler said.

The deputy medical examiner told Channel 4 the body was ready to be released to the family last Thursday. However, official policy requires police to notify the family.

Once the medical examiner identified the body using fingerprints, they told police.

Metro police then told the family they needed to contact the medical examiner's office with funeral home information. The medical examiner's office said the family did not do that until Monday morning.

The medical examiner's office then called the funeral home about nine minutes later.

"I could have had his services last week," Tiffany Fowler said. "I shouldn't have to wait a week later."

Police said they are still actively investigating this case and are committed to solving the crime. Police said they're still trying to determine a motive.

Gilbert Fowler's funeral is scheduled for Saturday at Community Baptist Church on Dickerson Pike.
