Rally protesting executions in TN held in downtown Nashville

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

As Tennessee prepares to execute its first inmate in nearly five years, the protests are already starting.

On Monday, voices rang out at Legislative Plaza where the group presented an open letter to Gov. Bill Haslam asking him to stop the upcoming execution.

Billy Ray Irick is the next Tennessee inmate scheduled to be put to death. He was convicted for raping and murdering a girl in 1986.

Protestors are concerned about recent botched executions in Oklahoma and Arizona and the fact that some death row inmates may be innocent.

Guest speaker Ndume Olatushani knows what that's like. He spent two decades on death row in Tennessee before his conviction was overturned.

"I think that whether it's Billy Irick or somebody else, that eventually Tennessee will certainly be, if they go through with this execution and continue to use this barbaric punishment, innocent people is gonna be killed," he said.
