Nashville mystery writer completes book on serial killer

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Nashville's best-known mystery writer recently had a real-life experience as weird as anything that has ever happened in one of his novels.

Edgar Award-winner Steven Womack has written 11 mystery novels, many set in Nashville. He just completed his latest novel, Resurrection Bay, based on serial killer Robert Hansen.

Hansen admitted to killing 17 women in Alaska during the '70s and '80s. He would rape his victims and then set them free to hunt them with a high-powered rifle.

Hansen was considered a family man in his Anchorage, AK community.

Womack co-wrote the book with Wayne McDaniel. McDaniel had written a screenplay that was optioned by Lawrence Bender, Quentin Tarantino's producer.

Bender was working on Resurrection Bay, but dropped the project to produce Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds.

That was when Womack and McDaniel started collaborating on the novel.

"Wayne and I worked on it for three years and never met," Womack said.

With the book done, the two decided to meet face-to-face in Nashville on Aug. 21.

"After working together intensely for three years, Robert Hansen died that very day we were in the lobby," Womack said. "Died in an Anchorage hospital."

Hansen died at the age of 75. It was a moment Womack and McDaniel will never forget.

"It was creepy," Womack said. "It made the hair on the back of our necks stand up."

Resurrection Bay is once again being marketed as a potential movie project.

Womack and McDaniel said Hansen would never talk about his crimes, but enjoyed talking about baking and loved to exchange recipes.
