Federal lawsuit filed over Harpeth River

Posted: Updated:

FRANKLIN, Tenn. (AP) - The Harpeth River Watershed Association has filed a federal lawsuit against the city of Franklin over its wastewater treatment plant.

The Tennessean reports the group claims in the lawsuit filed Monday that the plant is polluting the waterway. The newspaper reports the river has been included since 1998 on a state list of waterways that don't meet water quality standards.

City officials haven't responded to the lawsuit, but have defended the plant, saying in a statement that the group's claims are "exaggerations and misunderstanding of the regulatory requirements."

A permit allows the plant to treat 12 million gallons of wastewater each day and discharge the treated wastewater into the river.

Franklin officials noted that they have not received any notices of violation from state regulators.
