ELLIS COUNTY, TX (CNN) - A farmer and his son uncovered a rare find: an entire mammoth skeleton believed to be tens of thousands of years old.

Wayne McEwen and his son Marty stumbled on the skeleton on his property in Ellis County, south of Dallas.

Wayne farms the land and sells sand and gravel from it.

Marty was operating an excavator when he saw part of a tusk.

They contacted the Perot Museum of Nature and Science in Dallas about the find, and the museum was interested.

Paleontologists and volunteers will use the next few weeks to uncover the entire skeleton of the 9 ft Columbian mammoth.

They'll wrap the bones in plaster and burlap and move them to a lab to be studied.
