Vols announce addition of Memphis transfer Woodson

Posted: Updated:

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Tennessee has officially announced the arrival of Memphis transfer Dominic Woodson, though the 6-foot-10 forward's status for the 2014-15 season remains uncertain.

In a university release Friday, Tennessee coach Donnie Tyndall said Woodson has officially enrolled at school and joined the Volunteers program. Tennessee athletic department spokesman Tom Satkowiak said Woodson would be seeking an NCAA waiver allowing him to play this season. If the waiver isn't granted, Woodson wouldn't be able to play for his new team until 2015-16.

Woodson, who has three seasons of eligibility remaining, averaged 2.5 points and 1.9 rebounds per game for Memphis as a freshman this past season. He didn't travel to the NCAA tournament because of a violation of team rules.

"I've learned from my mistakes and realize I have a lot of work to do to achieve my goals and dreams," Woodson said Friday in a school release. "My efforts moving forward will be focused on making my family and all the people who have helped me proud."

If Woodson is able to play this season, he would provide some necessary bulk to Tennessee's frontcourt as the Volunteers attempt to replace second-round draft pick Jarnell Stokes and Jeronne Maymon from a team that went 24-13 and reached an NCAA regional semifinal this past season.

Memphis listed Woodson's weight at 300 pounds last season, though the Tennessee release announcing his arrival said he's now 290. Before Friday, Tennessee's roster didn't include anyone with a listed weight above 220.

"Dominic certainly adds some physicality and size to our front line," Tyndall said in a school release. "He has great upside. If he continues to improve his body and conditioning, he'll have a chance to be a very good player at this level."

If he plays this season, Woodson would become one of eight scholarship newcomers on Tennessee's 2014-15 team.
