The Durham Rescue Mission is making sure all kids get the supplies they need for the upcoming school year.

The organization is hosting its annual Back to School Party Thursday, with a backpack giveaway at 9 a.m.

The Durham Rescue Mission started the program in 1999 as a way to give needy children the school supplies they would need to start the year off right.

But the mission's co-founder Ernie Mills said it's more than giving away schools supplies, it's about saving kids from a possible rough future.

Mills believes if kids can get the tools they need to participate in class, then they are more likely to stay in school, get an education and less likely end up on the streets.

The giveaway also includes over 12,000 articles of clothing. Mills understands the importance of new clothes.

“My dad was a sharecropper, hog farmer and I was really embarrassed from one of my friends telling me my clothes stunk like a hog pen and he got up and moved away. We just want these kids to get in school and stay in school and finish,” Mills said.

Over the years, the annual event has attracted sponsors. This year's sponsors include GlaxoSmithKline and The Crosspointe Church of Cary.
