ATF asks dealers to report guns lost in mail

Posted: Updated:
NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

The ATF is trying to clear the air about a new proposal aimed at preventing crime.

The agency wants gun dealers to file reports whenever firearms are lost in the mail.

Every year, about 1,500 guns are lost during transit, and authorities said that number could be even higher because they usually find out when the weapons are used in crimes.

ATF officials said the rule change would not affect gun owners, only licensed dealers.

The agency published the plan last Tuesday, giving the public 90 days to weigh in on the proposal.
