Guard indicted in Memphis bus passenger death

Posted: Updated:

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Prosecutors say a Memphis Area Transit Authority security guard has been charged in the death of a man who was pushed off a city bus.

The Shelby County district attorney's office said Wednesday that 50-year-old Adicus Mitchell has been indicted on a charge of aggravated assault resulting in death.

Prosecutors say Mitchell had been called to deal with an unruly passenger and pushed 68-year-old James Gray off a bus at a terminal in May. Authorities say Gray, who had been the subject of the unruly passenger report, fell to the concrete face-first.

Gray was hospitalized in critical condition and died on Aug. 3.

Mitchell is free on $40,000 bond. His attorney did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
