Today's Most: Silver coins found in abandoned home sold to fund charities

Posted: Updated:
TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -  TODAY'S MOST...Interesting sale: A city in Florida will sell more than two thousand silver coins found recently in a demolished home. The money made in the sale will go to fund local charities.

The coins all date from 1917-1964. The coins were in pickle jars, and the city of St. Cloud announced the discovery of the coins last Friday. Some criticized the city for improperly condemning the home, but the police chief says that's untrue.

Chief Pete Gauntlett told the Orlando Sentinel "the property had accrued more than $500,000 in code-enforcement and lot-clearing fines. After due process, the city took possession of this property in 2012, and the structure was demolished to ensure the safety of everyone who came near the property."

It's still a mystery who owned the coins and/or stuffed them in the jars and hid them in the home. The last person who owned the home and abandoned it last year showed up to ask the city about the coins. He left without comment once the city said it had taken title of the home last year.

Some people in town are going to the site of the home and using metal detectors to see if they can find any more buried treasure.
