FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -

The State Highway Patrol is asking the public for help in locating a hit-and-run driver who killed a former firefighter in Fayetteville Monday night.

Ronald Reed Jr., 31, of Parkton, was hit and killed just after 10 p.m. Monday on Cumberland Road near Boone Trail, authorities said.

First responders said they heard Reed was visiting family in the area. Reed's neighbor in Parkton, Miriam Ulrich said Reed leaves behind a wife and two kids.

"I was shocked and couldn't help but shed some tears myself," Ulrich said. "He was a good man, real friendly. He meant a lot to me, and I'm going to miss him."

Reed served with the Parkton Fire Department for several years, but recently left the fire department, officials told the Robesonian newspaper.

The Highway Patrol recovered a small piece of chrome trim from the scene that may help with the investigation. Otherwise there are few clues to who hit reed. There are no witnesses and no suspect vehicle was found after a search of the area.

After impact, Reed's body came to rest near the Cumberland Road Fire Department.

Investigators will be reviewing security cameras at the fire department for any footage that may help the investigation.

Anyone with information, is being asked to contact the Fayetteville State Highway Patrol office at (910) 486-1334.
