DURHAM, N.C. -

Convenience stores are known for a quick place to pick up snacks and drinks that are not always the healthiest choice.

But the Express Mart at Roxboro and Geer streets in Durham is putting fruit at the counter to make it as visible as chewing gum and candy bars.

The owner partnered with the Durham County Department of Public Health to increase access to healthy foods in a neighborhood with few healthy options.

Some alcohol ads in the store were replaced with healthy living banners.

There are even labels marking items as being “good for you” throughout the store.

“I think more stores should do this so that more of us wouldn't pick more of the fattier foods and get more of the healthier foods and teach the children about eating more vegetables and fruits,” said customer Nicole Taylor.

According to the department of health, nearly two thirds of adults in Durham are considered overweight or obese.

Less than one in five eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day.

That number shrinks for people who bring in less than $50,000 a year.
