ONLY ON 3: Rope swing victim shares video from his Go-Pro camera

An Ooltewah man is talking to Channel 3 Eyewitness News just days after he was seriously injured in a fall on Mowbray Mountain.

Channel 3 was the only crew there as Nick Stovall, 28 was pulled from the woods.  It took crews nearly 7 hours to secure him and bring him out of the rough terrain.

The entire accident was caught on Stovall's Go-Pro camera; he shared the video solely with Channel 3 to show how dangerous rope swings can be.

“I guess I didn't start high enough and so I didn't make it out far enough over the water,” said Stovall.

Now out of the hospital Stovall says he is recovering from two fractured vertebrae, a fractured hip and pelvis. He tells Channel 3 when the rope swing didn't put him over the water, he held on hoping his second swing across the rock would be enough.

“I kind of bumped into a tree and started spinning uncontrollably I kind of just lost my grip,” said Stovall.

Stovall said he was saved by his younger brother and friend. In the hours ahead, across three miles of rough terrain, about 45-50 volunteers took turns carrying him to safety. Stovall said even some of the most stressful moments fearing copperheads, darkness and pain he was able to smile thanks to first responders.

"We went through half of "Airplane" the movie just sitting there quoting it off that's a funny movie,” said Stovall.

“For them to put themselves in harm's way to carry me out of there I don't have any words for how thankful I am,” said Stovall.

Stovall who is not a beginner at rope swinging offers up his advice to other outdoor enthusiasts.

“If you think it's a bad idea ...it probably is,” said Stovall.

Because first responders kept his spine still through the 7 hour hike Stovall's doctors told him they are confident he will make a full recovery. For now he is in a back brace for at least 8 weeks.
