DCS asks TBI to review teen deaths

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The Tennessee Department of Children's Services has asked the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation to review two suicides that happened within a month of each other at a facility for delinquent youths.

The Tennessean reports DCS chief Jim Henry asked the TBI and the Tennessee Commission on Children and Youth to review what happened in both incidents at the Mountain View Youth Development Center in East Tennessee.

An 18-year-old male died Saturday after hanging himself at the facility. That incident came about three weeks after a 16-year-old boy also hanged himself.

Both deaths are under investigation by Dandridge police, a special investigations unit at DCS and medical examiners.

The deaths come a year after multiple problems at DCS led to a reorganization and a change in leadership.
