Early voting records fall for August primary

Posted: Updated:

A record number of Tennesseans voted early in advance of Thursday's elections.

More than 560,000 voted across the state during the early voting period.

Some voters said it is easier to vote early.

"We always go early to avoid the crowds on election day. That's why we vote early," said Glyna Aderhold.

Others said it feels quicker to vote early rather than on election day.

"I vote early because it's convenient, in and out in 10 minutes," said David Weeks.

For one reason or another, a record number of voters hit the polls early this year.

In 68 of the 95 counties, there was a bigger turnout compared to the early voting period in the last comparable election in August 2010.

"I think the campaign has forced a lot of people out who probably wouldn't vote in the primary," said Aderhold.

Several heated races could explain the jump in voter turnout.

"The whole thing about the Supreme Court retention is the only thing I can think of," said Weeks.

According to the group Justice at Stake, the fight over the state Supreme Court has topped more than $1 million in spending.

Public records show at least $987,000 of that cash funded TV ad contracts.

Ads for and against the justices hit the airwaves weeks ago prompting many to ask whether politics has a place in the court.

"I wish it would be a much cleaner election," said Aderhold. "I wish we didn't have all the dirty politics."

Voters still have time to decide, as long as you're registered to vote. Otherwise you might have to wait until the next election in November.

In Tennessee, voters must register 30 days before an election.

The polls will be open on Thursday. Hours vary from county-to-county on when polls open, but all polls close at 7 p.m.

In Davidson County, polls open at 7 a.m.
