NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A Nashville musician survived a vicious attack outside his home, and now, his friends are asking for help with his recovery.

Nathan Zumwalt, 26, was shot and robbed outside of his home on Ewingdale Drive in north Nashville home last Thursday.

Zumwalt had just come home from hanging out with friends and put his key in the door when a man approached him asking for money. He told him no, but before he could get inside, police say the man pulled out a gun and shot him.

The bullet hit Zumwalt in his abdomen, nicking several organs.

Luckily, his roommates were home and called for help right away.

Kaitlin Ellis called 911 while her boyfriend applied pressure to the wound.

"There were like a couple times that were touch and go, but he pulled through and he's doing great now," he said.

After three surgeries and several transfusions, Zumwalt is expected to be OK. While his wounds are healing, Ellis said the hospital stay could cripple him financially, potentially racking up tens of thousands of dollars in medical bills.

She started an online account on YouCaring.com to raise money for his expenses.

"He just turned 26, so six months ago, he would have been on his parents' insurance," Ellis said. "His family's going through enough emotionally that I don't want them to have to worry about so much financial burdens."

They've already raised almost $4,000 since Monday.

"You can't put a price on his life. I mean, I don't care if it was $3 million, it would be worth everything," Ellis said.

The Metro Nashville Police Department said no arrests have been made in the case but detectives are working some strong leads. If you have any information about the shooting, call 74-CRIME.
